The Doña Ana County Government Center opened a new off-site cat adoption center for the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley this week, aiming to further reduce the euthanasia rate for healthy, adoptable animals in Doña Ana County.
The kitty condo was created through an initiative of the Doña Ana County Coalition for Pets and People and endorsed by the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners.
“As a community, we should be doing all we can to educate the public about proper pet ownership,” said Doña Ana County Manager Brian Haines. “That includes facilitating efforts like this one to create and sustain accessible adoption sites throughout the county.”
Visitors to the Government Center, located at 845 N. Motel Blvd., can see any of the kittens on display during normal business hours. Adoption applications are available at the front desk, and the fee to adopt a kitten is $50. The adoption fee includes a microchip, a spay/neuter operation, a state-mandated rabies vaccination and a one-year pet license for City of Las Cruces residents.
Kittens on display are from a single litter. Once all kittens from a litter have been adopted, the condo will be sanitized before a new litter arrives. Care of the kittens is entrusted to the staff of the Doña Ana County Special Projects Office, supervised by Jess Williams.
Adoption applications are available at the Doña Ana County Government Center, along with information about each kitten’s gender. Once a kitten is selected for adoption, all paperwork and fees will be processed at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley at 3551 Bataan Memorial West in Las Cruces. After the paperwork and payments are processed at the shelter, the kitten can be released to its new owner.
