The grand opening ceremony for the Third Judicial District Court Expansion project will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, in the expansion wing on the south part of the court complex. The public is encouraged to attend.
Doña Ana County Commission Chairman William J. Bill McCamley and Third Judicial District Presiding Judge Robert E. Robles will speak at the event. Representatives of ASA Architects and Williamson Construction will be on hand and will provide refreshments.
The $2.3 million, 15,800 square-foot expansion added two courtrooms, two hearing rooms and a domestic-relations office suite to the court complex. The expansion also features enhanced security and efficiency in the court complex and was designed to meet the projected growth needs of the judges, clerks and support staff for an estimated 10 years.
Doña Ana County funded the expansion without raising property taxes or indebting the county with bonds. Partial funding for the planning and design phases of the project came from the New Mexico Legislature.
Doña Ana County also coordinated closely with the New Mexico Office of Historical Preservation to insure that the expansion complements the historic nature of the original complex. The expansion includes a memorial to the former Home Economics Building that once stood on the expansion site.
ASA Architects, Williamson Construction, the judges of the Third Judicial District and the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners worked together through the planning and construction stages of the project. Their shared vision was to create an efficient and aesthetic design that will enhance the ability of the courts to perform their critical duties in facilities that reflect the dignity of the judicial process and the historical significance of the site.
