CLASSES OFFERED TO TACKLE OPIOID ISSUES IN DOÑA ANA COUNTY

Doña Ana County, in collaboration with the New Mexico Opioid State Targeted Response Initiative, is hosting two courses in Las Cruces to help address the opioid crisis.

On Friday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Robert Rhyne, M.D. and Ernest Doyle, Pharm. D., FASHP will provide the SAFER Opioid Prescribing and Education Training at La Clinica de Familia.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Data 2000 Waver: Buprenorphine Certification course will be held at Memorial Medical Center.

Both courses offer free CMSs for certain healthcare providers.

The Safer Opioid Prescribing and Education course provides guidance that is essential for safe and effective pain management when prescribing opioids, which is proven to reduce the risk of abuse.

The Data 2000 Waver allows providers to prescribe medication for the treatment of opioid-use disorders. Providers require at least eight hours of training on medication-assisted treatment to obtain a waiver from the Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe buprenorphine, one of the three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder.

Physicians will complete the final four hours of training online. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners must take an additional 18 hours of online training.             Further information about the online coursework will be provided at the training.

Each of the courses is open to healthcare providers and will increase access to medication-assisted treatment, which is the use of medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance-abuse disorders.

Research shows that a combination of medication and therapy can successfully treat these disorders, and for some people struggling with addiction.

Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Cynthia Estrada at cynthiam@donaanacounty.org or (575) 525-5864.
