COUNTY CONGRATULATES FORMER COMMISSIONER ON STATE APPOINTMENT

Billy G. Garrett, a former Doña Ana County commissioner in District 1, has been appointed interim director of the New Mexico Museum of History and Palace of the Governors by Debra Garcia Griego, Cabinet Secretary for the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
County manager Fernando R. Macias extended a heartfelt congratulations to Garrett on Monday upon hearing the news.
“This distinction is a reflection of Mr. Garrett’s lifelong commitment to preserving the cultural assets of New Mexico, just as he did in his capacity here in Doña Ana County,” said Macias. “The county, and our Board of County Commissioners, are extremely proud of him and wish him well in his new endeavors.”
As interim director, Garrett will oversee the daily operations of the museum, according to a news release from the Department of Cultural Affairs. The museum hosts exhibitions and public programs that showcase a variety of historical experiences in New Mexico, including “Telling New Mexico: Stories from Then and Now”, a 500-year historical exhibit that includes oral histories, photographs, artifacts and videos.
In total, the museum campus includes the Pete V. Domenici New Mexico Museum of History, the Palace of the Governors, Palace Press, Fray Angelico Chavez History Library, Palace Photo Archives and the Native American Artisans Program.
Garrett served two consecutive terms as commissioner, from 2010 to 2018. In his elected capacity, he was an advocate for responsible community planning and chaired the committee that managed the Viva Doña Ana regional planning initiative. He is a third generation New Mexican, retiring from the National Parks Service after a 26-year career.
