Garcia served as Doña Ana County Sheriff from 1959 to 1962.
In 1959, Garcia was reportedly the youngest candidate elected to the sheriff’s office in Doña Ana County, serving until 1962. Prior to his election, Garcia worked as a dispatcher for the sheriff’s department after serving in the United States Army. After his term in office, he went to work for the Las Cruces Police Department as a detective and was later promoted to sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division. Garcia retired from LCPD in 1984 and returned to DASO part-time. In total, Garcia’s career in law enforcement spanned nearly four decades.
“Our sheriff’s department has a long and often noteworthy history,” said Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart. “We recognize Sheriff Garcia’s contribution to the Office, and thank his family for their continued support to the present.”
Garcia was laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Las Cruces.
