First observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, it was enacted into federal law in 1988.
Among other local celebrations, Bellas Artes Sin Fronteras will feature a Hispanic Heritage Month Awards to honor people who contributed to the community, featuring a Fiesta Buffet and dance, on Oct. 11.
New Mexico State University held a Fan Fiesta tied to its home-opening football game in September and included an educational presentation hosted by the university’s Chicano Programs.
Doña Ana Community College will host a Hispanic Cultural Fair featuring a lecture series, educational outreach and entertainment from Oct. 12 through Oct. 15.
