FIREFIGHTERS TRAIN TO INSPECT, INSTALL CHILD SEATS

Doña Ana County Fire & Emergency Services Department personnel are undergoing car-seat technician training in order to learn how to make children safer while riding in vehicles.

Fire Chief Nick Hempel encouraged participation from the firefighters, and firefighters Arturo Arellano, Christopher Valenzuela, Philip Rey and Victoria Buenostro were the first to take the training.

“This is a great service for caregivers who transport children under the age of 12,” said Health and Human Services Department Director Jamie Michael. “Research shows that up to 94 percent of car seats are used incorrectly.”

Free child-seat safety clinics are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 4-6 p.m. at Sisbarro GMC in Las Cruces.
