New K9 Dallas

Dallas, the six-year-old giant schnauzer that was introduced to Doña Ana County in 2015 as an addition to the detention center’s Special Operations Response Team, has received a new assignment at the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
The transfer took place this week at the Doña Ana County Detention Center. Dallas, who was purchased as a riot-disturbance K9, is also a drug-sniffing dog and will be used at DASO to reestablish the department’s K9 division.
A series of retirements earlier this year forced Sheriff Kim Stewart to temporarily shelve the program.
According to Stewart, Dallas will be placed with a handler within her agency while she posts for a collateral duty assignment among current deputies. The selected deputy will attend specialized K9 training along with Dallas.
“This is a great opportunity to use resources already available to us in Doña Ana County, and to build our K9 division back to where it was,” said Stewart.
Dallas is skilled in adapting to new environments, responds well to multiple handlers, and answers to German commands.
The transfer was initiated after his handler at the detention center took another position outside Doña Ana County.
