REVAMPED CITIZENS ACADEMY STARTS THIS SUMMER

REVAMPED CITIZENS ACADEMY STARTS THIS SUMMER

Applications are now being accepted for a revamped Citizen’s Police Academy with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, complete with a new schedule and curriculum.
The six-week academy will run June 25 through Aug. 6, 2019 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Class will not meet on the July 4 holiday.
Previously, academies were hosted on the weekends for eight consecutive Saturday mornings. The new schedule was developed to attract residents who have more flexibility during the week, or college students who might be interested in a law enforcement career.
The academy takes class members through various divisions of the department in an effort to strengthen community partnerships through education and awareness. Academy participants are volunteers who wish to learn more about the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department; it is not the cadet academy for those who wish to become certified law-enforcement officers with DASO.
Successful applicants must be 18 years of age or older, a resident of Doña Ana County, and must have a valid driver’s license or photo ID. Because of the sensitive nature of police work, a brief background check will be conducted on each applicant. Participants must not have any prior felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests within the last three years.
Applications can be downloaded at www.goDASO.org. Complete applications must be dropped off at the main headquarters, 845 N. Motel Blvd. in Las Cruces. Twenty qualified applicants are needed for an academy, and organizers say a maximum of 30 participants will be taken.
