SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS RETURN TO THE GADSDEN CAMPUS AUG. 6

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS RETURN TO THE GADSDEN CAMPUS AUG. 6

Three Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies will be going back to school on Monday, Aug. 6.
The positions are part of DASO’s relaunch of the School Resource Officer (SRO) Division, which experienced an approximate 10-year hiatus due to staffing shortages.
“We’re still short deputies department-wide,” said Sgt. Michelle Ugalde, who supervises the unit. “But there’s a critical need nationwide to have SROs back in schools, and this is the beginning of that effort.”
The partnership between the sheriff’s department and the Gadsden Independent School District (GISD) will place three full-time deputies at all three GISD high school campuses: Chaparral High School, Santa Teresa High School, and Gadsden High School. The agreement provides that GISD pays half the salary for each deputy.
All three deputies applied for the positions as a lateral duty and received specialized training. Previously, they were assigned to the Patrol Division.
According to Sgt. Ugalde, the move was well-received by staff at all three high schools, and the deputies are equally as enthusiastic to be back on campus.
“I’m a native of Doña Ana County, and this opportunity is a personal one for me,” said Deputy Gerald Sanchez, who will be assigned to Gadsden High School. “I’m excited to help make this a safe and positive learning environment for the students and the staff.”
Deputy Jeremy Maldonado will be on duty at Santa Teresa High School and Deputy Jacob Urbina will be assigned to Chaparral High School.
The department hopes to expand the program in the near future to include additional deputies in the middle schools.
