SHERIFF’S DETECTIVES WARN OF NEW CHECK SCAM

A new form of check fraud is circulating in Doña Ana County, and sheriff’s detectives are warning residents to be cautious when conducting business on classified advertisement websites like Craigslist.
A Doña Ana County resident recently told sheriff’s detectives s/he had received a check in the mail from someone who had inquired about an item for sale on Craigslist. The check was made out for $1,930, and included instructions on how to cash the check and keep the “remainder in cash or Walmart gift cards” that would be “picked up at a later date.”
The resident keenly recognized the check as fraudulent and turned it over to the sheriff’s department.
Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives warn residents to be skeptical when conducting business over the Internet, and advise them never to disclose personal or sensitive information such as bank account or Social Security numbers over the phone.
