COUNTY’S NUESTRA VIDA PROGRAM HOSTS DIABETES MANAGEMENT CLASSES

The Board of Doña Ana County Commissioners joined the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases proclaiming November as Diabetes Awareness Month during their regular meeting, Tuesday.

New Mexico’s Department of Health estimates more than 245,000 adults in our state have diabetes. “More importantly, among the 535,000 people who have prediabetes, it is estimated that up to 70% do not know they have it,” Jamie Michael, Health and Human Services Director said.  “That means that there is an opportunity to intervene to prevent or manage the disease progression, and these interventions should include policy, environmental and social efforts.”

Doña Ana County’s Health and Human Services Department began working on diabetes education and awareness in our community in 2013. HHS oversees a program called Nuestra Vida or Our Life, an evidence-based intervention and outreach program that aims to improve the prevention and self-management of diabetes among youths and adults. Through classes and outreach, the program increases awareness and provides support for the prevention and healthy management of pre-diabetes and diabetes, promoting healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle.

Throughout 2020, 56 people participated in the program and half of them lost weight.  More importantly, 41% reduced their cholesterol levels and 16% reduced their A1C results.  A1C is the hemoglobin or HbA1c blood test which measures the average blood sugar levels, over the past 3 months.

The Doña Ana County Nuestra Vida program offers the following hour-long classes in multiple locations, several times per week:
