The Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office Announces Minor Party, Write-in, Judicial Retention and Independent Candidate Filing Day for the 2020 General Election

Doña Ana County Clerk Amanda López Askin announced Thursday, June 25th, as filing day for the 2020 General Election for minor party, write-in, judicial retention and independent candidates.

Interested individuals will be required to file declarations of candidacy, nominating petitions and/or financial disclosure statements depending on the position they are interested in pursuing in the general election. Candidates may file between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Clerk’s Office located at 845 N. Motel Blvd in Las Cruces.

Minor party nominations for President of the United States shall be nominated through their respective political convention and must be provided to the Secretary of State after the party convention. Minor parties include the Green Party of New Mexico, Better for America Party of New Mexico and the Constitution Party of New Mexico. Independent candidates may also file for President of the United States on this date.

Pursuant to NMSA § 1-8-66(E), no candidate may be a write-in candidate in the general election who was a candidate or who filed a declaration of candidacy in the primary election immediately prior to the general election.

Nonpartisan judicial retention positions include the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court or Metropolitan Court.

In light of the current on-going global pandemic, social distancing protocols will still be in place for candidates and those accompanying them. All those visiting the Government Center are asked to wear a mask and maintain at least a six feet distance from others.
